On the inside
an immersive audio tour in the fannie bay gaol
Created over twelve months with more than thirty locals, ‘On the Inside’ takes visitors back in time to discover stories from Darwin’s oldest prison.
Utilising archival records, oral histories and 360 degree sound , this cutting edge audio tour brings to life the memories and recollections of those who passed through the gaol.
The 50-minute tour is guided by Larrakia Elder Dr Richard Fejo, who, through the tour’s development, discovered a personal connection.
‘My own relative Alice Fejo was in here too, which surprised me, because before this project I had no idea she’d been in Fannie Bay Gaol. I learned lots about how people came to be imprisoned and what life was like for them. And there's lots of escape stories too. At one point, Fannie Bay Gaol had a reputation for being Australia's easiest prison to break out of. One guy even got all the way to New York City before they caught him!’
‘You’ll be surprised by what you learn and by how much things have and haven’t changed.’
